Nothing says comfort food like a pile of crispy french fries. Since the AIP Diet eliminates potatoes for the first phase, finding this stereotypical treat may seem like a challenge. We’ve found several alternatives that will bring the joy back into your casual meals.

One of the easiest fry substitutes is one of the least expected. Jicama is a sweet, crunchy root native to Mexico. It’s crispy texture and mild taste make it perfect for fry substitutes.
To turn the root into fries, first peel the outer layer. Slice the jicama into fries. Parboil the fries until they’re just starting to become tender (usually 5-10 minutes). Drain the fries and make sure that they’re dry. Place in your airfryer and spray with your favorite AIP oil (olive, avocado, etc). Air fry at 400 degrees until golden brown. Lightly season (salt, garlic powder, onion powder, dried herbs) and enjoy!

Korean Radish is another good fry substitute. The meat is a finer texture and a little softer than jicama. Because of this it’s important to pay attention to texture while cooking. It’s easy to over boil, making a mushy mess.
Prep and cooking is the same as jicama. Pay close attention to avoid over cooking.
